Who should take this course?
Prerequisites
Ayurvedic students and professionals are welcome.
An existing knowledge of the following concepts is required: Doshas, Subdoshas, Dhatus, Malas and Agnis (equivalent to our Principles of Ayurveda course – available for purchase in our Prerequisite Bundle).

- You can use these techniques to prepare formulations at home for personal wellbeing.
- If you are a practicing professional, you can prepare herbal formulations for your clients.
- Ayurvedic herbal formulation recommendations are emphasized at different scopes of practice. We’ll answer your questions during the training to guide you on how to apply your knowledge as an Ayurvedic professional.
- If you are new to Ayurveda, you’re welcome to join the program for general knowledge, so long as you complete the prerequisites listed above.

Our Academy & Wellness Center
In person classes are offered at our flagship U.S. Academy and Wellness Center located in the heart of Silicon Valley, nestled between the golden-green East Bay Hills, majestic Santa Cruz Mountains and beautiful San Francisco Bay.
The Kerala Ayurveda office is located on the second floor and includes a spacious classroom for lectures, conference room, consultation and Panchakarma rooms, Wellness lounge for our clients and Panchakarma kitchen/restrooms for treatment use. Our building offers additional conference and auditorium spaces.
Amenities include free wifi, tea and spring water station, break room and ample parking spaces. The center is located near several hotels, restaurants and shopping centers, with widely available ride sharing options. Nearby airports include: San Jose International (SJC), San Francisco International (SFO) and Oakland International (OAK). Our Student Support team can provide more information and local guidance for planning your visit.
Live streaming technology
We introduced live streaming technology to our Ayurvedic education in 2015. Our classes are currently conducted using Zoom and provide students an opportunity to study live and interact with faculty.
Zoom can be accessed on mobile, tablets, laptops and desktop devices. Class moderators support our larger class sessions to provide a smooth technical experience. All live streamed classes are recorded for later viewing in our elearning system.
Elearning
Our courses are powered by a robust elearning system that connects our global community of students and faculty. The elearning portal is where students may access all of their course information, materials and curriculum, including: course syllabus, schedule, coursed manual PDFs, class slide decks, class notes and links to live streaming class sessions. The elearning portal is also where tests and assignments are conducted, and where students may submit questions.
Curriculum
It’s our mission to preserve the traditional teachings of Ayurveda. This course includes herbal formulation knowledge as documented in classical Ayurvedic texts, offering an authentic education in the traditional Vedic system of knowledge.
Topics
Ayurvedic Herbology Overview
The Ayurvedic herbal recipes for healing were carefully designed thousands of years ago to balance the healing properties of the ingredients and mitigate side effects.
We'll begin with an overview of Ayurvedic Herbology (Dravyaguna) & Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics (Bhaishajya kalpana).
Formulation Best Practices
Learn the dos and don'ts of mixing, combining, procuring and storing your herbs. We'll also cover dosage to round out your foundational principles.
Primary Formulation Preparations
Learn how to prepare Primary Formulations: Swarasa, Kalka, Choorna, Sheeta and Phanta.
Milk and Water Decoction Making
We'll prepare herbal decoctions with milk and water - Kwatha Kalpana & Ksheerapaka.
Oil Preparations
You'll learn three primary oil preparations: oil for nasal administration (Nasya), oil for therapeutic enemas (Vasti/Basti) and oil for massage or external application (Abhyanga).
Fermented Preparations
Discover the preparation process for fermented Ayurvedic formulations: Arishta and Asava.
Ghee Preparations
Ghee (Ghrita Kalpana) is a staple ingredient in Ayurvedic medicine. Learn step-by-step how to make ghee at home for therapeutic purposes. We'll cover ghee for eye therapy (Netra Tharpana/Netra Vasti) and for consumption (Snehapana).
Ayurvedic Tablet Making
Before tablets were mass-produced like today's supplements, they were handmade. Learn the ancient way to prepare the ingredients and form these handmade tablets, called Gudika Kalpana.
Therapeutic Jam Making
Lehya Kalpana or therapeutic jams are a common dosage form of Ayurvedic formulations. They are known for their ease of administration and their taste, which is characterized by the sweetness of jaggery or sugar.
Faculty
Vaidya. Jayarajan Kodikannath (BSc, BAMS)
Vaidya. Jayarajan Kodikannath is a classically trained Ayurvedic Doctor and an accomplished teacher representing a lineage of Ayurveda practitioners from Kerala, India currently working as the Executive Vice President of KAL India and CEO of Kerala Ayurveda (USA).
Suffused with expertise in Traditional Indian Medicine (Ayurveda) practices especially Panchakarma (Ayurvedic detoxification), a specialty of Kerala Ayurveda tradition, Vaidya. Jayarajan worked as the Chief Medical Officer of the award-winning Ayurvedic Health Resort, Ayurvedagram in Bangalore, India for more than 10 years before relocating to the U.S. in 2010.
He is currently the President of the National Ayurveda Medical Association (NAMA). He is an accomplished teacher for the advanced courses in Ayurveda and the resource person for various training programs conducted in traditional Ayurvedic therapies and medicine. He was on the Board of Directors of California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine (CAAM) and on the Curriculum Board of Bastyr University to create the Masters in Ayurveda program. His corporate sessions and workshops on applications of Ayurveda in daily life, stress management and BMS (Body, Mind & Soul) are immensely popular.
Vaidya. Jayarajan is actively involved in various research projects of Kerala Ayurveda. He has presented several papers on Ayurveda in national and international seminars. His debut publication The Parent’s Complete Guide to Ayurveda can be found wherever books are sold.
