Below are some simple but powerful tips that can help you thrive in the heat and restore your body’s natural balance.
According to Ayurveda, summer or Grishma Ritu is when Pitta dosha, the fire element in the body, is most easily aggravated. This can lead to inflammation, skin irritation, digestive issues, mood swings, and fatigue. But the right adjustments to your food, daily routine, and self-care rituals can transform your summer experience.
1. Prioritize Light, Cooling Foods
Digestion slows down in the heat. Choose:
- Hydrating dishes like moong dal khichdi, green veggie & golden beet quinoa salad
- Naturally sweet, mildly spiced meals
- Avoid: fried, spicy, or processed foods
2. Hydrate the Right Way
Instead of iced drinks or soda, sip Ayurvedic drinks this summer:
- Coconut water
- Sugarcane juice
- Fresh juices (watermelon, pomegranate, grapes)
3. Avoid Overheating Spices
Overuse of chili, garlic, and salt can increase body heat. Try fennel, coriander, mint, and cardamom – cooling alternatives that aid digestion.
4. Skip Fasting in Hot Weather
Fasting depletes energy in summer. Eat small, nourishing meals with hydrating fruits, cooked vegetables, and herbal teas like cumin-coriander-fennel.
5. Start Your Day with a Cool Shower not Cold Shower
A lukewarm or cool shower on the head refreshes the mind, reduces internal heat, and is a great way to begin your day with clarity.
6. Ayurveda and Movement
- Practice gentle yoga, stretching, or walking early morning or evening
- Avoid peak heat hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.)
7. Avoid Alcohol and Smoking
Both are heating and depleting. Alcohol can worsen Pitta imbalance, and smoking increases dryness and weakens immunity.
8. Embrace Midday Naps
Ayurveda supports short afternoon naps in summer. Rest during the hottest part of the day (30–45 minutes) to restore energy and calm the nervous system.
9. Wear Breathable, Loose Clothing
Opt for:
- Cotton or linen
- Light colors
- Flowy fits to prevent overheating and skin irritation
10. Use a Cool Towel at Night
Wipe your body with a soft towel dipped in cool water before bed. This helps draw out excess heat and promotes deeper sleep.
11. Conserve Ojas - Your Vital Life Force
Ojas is the essence of immunity and vitality. Overexertion, overstimulation during hot weather can deplete it. Stay grounded with calming rituals and balancing therapies for the mind and body.
